Celebrate Life: Alternatives to the Death Penalty was held in the Capitol Rotunda, Wednesday, March 2.
IAC Board member Karen Burkhart opened the celebration with a review of death penalty developments in 2015.
Michael Kempf, Board Member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, presented “The Cost of Capital Punishment for the Mentally Ill”. NAMI urges jurisdictions that impose capital punishment not to execute persons with mental disabilities under certain circumstances, and is part of the coalition supporting the introduction of a bill to exempt those with serious mental illness from the death penalty in the 2017 Indiana General Assembly.
IAC Past-President Doris Parlette was named the 2016 Indiana Abolitionist of the Year for her work re-energizing and growing IAC. President Matt Ellis sent us off inspired with his closing remarks.
